Japan Railway will launch a reservation system on Wednesday for passengers traveling with oversized baggage on Shinkansen trains.
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines, passengers traveling with oversized luggage will need to reserve a storage bay before boarding at ticket offices or online.
Luggage with a height, width and depth that add up to over 160 centimeters is classified as oversized and can be stowed on Shinkansen trains at no extra cost if passengers reserve a storage bay in advance.
Passengers who haven't reserved a storage bay in advance will have to pay a fee of 1,000 yen.
Central Japan Railway Co. has installed additional space for oversized baggage behind the last row of some cars.
"The number of passengers from overseas will increase when the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics are held next year. We urge customers to make a reservation in advance in order to avoid confusion over baggage," a JR Tokai official said.
