With 254 athletes representing Japan at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, the Japan Paralympic Committee is aiming to secure 20 gold medals, a goal it set before the postponement of the Games last year.
Japan failed to score any gold medals at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics five years ago.
Following the success of Japan's Olympic team, which secured a record 27 golds this summer, the Paralympic team hopes to break the previous record of 17 Paralympic gold medals that it won in Seoul in 1988 and Athens in 2004.
However, the training programs of many athletes have been affected by major restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We will continue to focus on giving our best performance, and we hope it leads to medals," a JPC official said.
