JP McManus thrilled to be welcoming Masters hero Tiger Woods to Ireland next year

JP McManus can't wait to welcome his close friend Tiger Woods to Limerick next year after the American's remarkable Masters victory.

Woods stunned the sporting world by winning his first major title in 11 years at Augusta last Sunday.

It came after a series of personal issues and back surgeries that left him wondering if he would play the game again only a few years ago.

And the 43-year-old, who is now only three major championships behind Jack Nicklaus' record haul, will be teeing up on McManus' home turf next year.

Woods has already confirmed he will play in McManus' Pro-Am event at Adare Manor for the fourth time in July 2020.

McManus said: "It's exciting to have Tiger. He announced he was playing after Limerick won the All-Ireland which made it a great week for us.

"A lot of the other top players in the world have committed to coming. It's exciting times."

The event is set to attract huge crowds to the Limerick venue with other star golfers like Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry already confirmed.

They will be joined by amateur players that include Hollywood actors Mark Wahlberg and Hugh Grant with many more to come.

But star billing will be reserved for Woods with McManus heaping praise on his old friend for one of the best ever sporting comebacks.

"I could feel the adrenaline running through me," the businessman told RTÉ 2fm's Game on.

"It was something else. No matter how short the putt [to win it] was, you were always worried it might not happen! But knowing Tiger, it had to happen.

"This was one of the iconic moments in sport. People will remember where they were when Tiger won the Masters in 2019. It was the most remarkable comeback for a man who was beset by injuries; his strength of character and mind to do that, after being in the wilderness, or out of the limelight I should say, for a long time.

"He made some poor shots - not that many - but he never followed a poor shot with a mistake.

"It's just so special, and it's so good for golf."
