Jozo Simunovic has Southampton 'option' as Celtic hero weighs up elite league trio

Former Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic is reportedly attracting the interest of Southampton as well as a German duo.

The Croat was released by the Hoops at the end of last season and hasn't played since the Europa League defeat to FC Copenhagen.

Simunovic has seen moves to Turkey and his native Croatia collapsed due to doubts over his long-term fitness.

The centre-back has a history of knee problems and has seen switches to Rijeka, Trabzonspor and Goztepe fall through but he's now wanted by Bundesliga outfits Stuttgart and Augsburg.

And according to Goal Germany Premier League side Southampton are also vying for his signature.

The Saints are looking to strengthen at the back after defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle, and the website believes that Simunovic is open to the move.

If a deal goes through he'd join add to the ranks of former Celtic stars with Stuart Armstrong and Fraser Forster already on the books at St Mary's.

Simunovic won five league titles with Celtic before his release last summer.
