Jozo Simunovic ends post Celtic hell at last as defender explains his 55 number

Former Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic has finally found a new club as he explains why he chose to take the No.55 shirt.

The centre-back was surprisingly released after the early end to the 2019-20 Premiership season and had been struggling to find a new club.

Having left Celtic he had a number of options lined up but those fell through due to concern over a troublesome knee injury.

But Simunovic has finally found a new home as he joins HNK Gorica.

The big defender said: "It's a nice feeling to return home, to a club from my hometown, after so many years abroad. I’ve been in this area for the last year, and now I’m home in football terms too.

"And I am overjoyed to be back training and getting that competitive rhythm. I am looking forward to everything that awaits us together.

"I left Celtic last summer, a lot has happened in the meantime, but nothing came to fruition until this agreement with Gorica. I am here now, completely focused on every training session, with a great desire to get back in the best possible shape as soon as possible.

"The injury has healed, everything is fine, now it's just a matter of time to adapt to training and matches."

Simunovic will wear the number 55 shirt for his new club, but made clear that choice had nothing to do with his former arch-rivals Rangers.

The 27-year-old explained: ""Until now, I always wore a five, and now I have decided to take two, to be twice as good as before."
