Jozef Venglos dead at 84 as former Celtic manager who signed Lubomir Moravcik passes away

Former Celtic and Aston Villa manager Jozef Venglos has died aged 84.

The Slovak managed Celtic in season 1998-99 and famously brought Lubomir Moravcik to the club for just £350,000.

His best moment in charge of the Hoops was in leading them to a 5-1 victory over Rangers at Parkhead when doubles from Henrik Larsson and Moravcik put Dick Advocaat's team to the sword.

The Ibrox team were to get their own back by winning the treble and Venglos would make way for John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish's much vaunted 'Dream Team'.

Celtic moved to pay their respects to their former boss with a social media tribute.

A post on Twitter read: "Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Celtic manager Jozef Vengloš.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. RIP Dr. Jo, YNWA."

Broadcaster and former player Stan Collymore, who is a big Aston Villa fan, also took to Twitter to mark the former boss' passing.

He said: "Sad news that Dr Jo Venglos has passed away.

"First ever foreign manager to manage in the English top flight with Villa, didn't last long but always came across as a decent man. Rest in peace, Dr Jo."

Before his spell in Glasgow he became the first manager born abroad to take charge of a club in the English top flight when taking over at Villa in 1990.

Venglos had made his name with a successful spell as Czechoslovakia boss where he took them to a third place finish in the European Championships and leading them to the group stage of the 1982 World Cup.

He also had spells at Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon and with Fenerbahce in Turkey.

After Celtic, he went on to manage again with a short spell at JEF United Ichihara before retiring in 2002.

He held a doctorate in Physical Education and was a figure of high repute in FIFA.
