Joyous scenes as St Patrick's Athletic celebrate advancing past Mura in nerve-racking shootout

St Patrick's Athletic players got to revel in the ecstasy of winning a penalty shootout on what was a sensational night for Irish football.

While Sligo Rovers had it relatively straightforward in the end as they led throughout their 2-0 win at home against Motherwell, The Saints had to absorb plenty of pressure over 120 minutes in Slovenia before eventually coming out on top.

Sure enough their exhausted players were able to summon one last adrenaline-fueled surge of energy as they jumped around their dressing room in celebration.

They largely have goalkeeper Joseph Anang to thank for getting them to penalties as he made a string of saves that showcased the wonderful reflexes he's become known for this season.

There was also a stroke of luck bestowed upon them from the referee as with 15 minutes of regulation left, substitute Matic Marusko was shown a straight red for slapping out at Chris Forrester after the playmaker had initially had a swat at him.

Strangely though, the home side finished the 90 minutes the stronger and that trend even carried over into extra-time as they continued to bombard Anang's goal only for the agile keeper, on loan from West Ham, to prove up to the task of saving everything that came his way.

He also saved one in what was a particularly tense penalty shootout with the Inchicore outfit ultimately triumphing 6-5 after both sides had sent multiple spot kicks off target.
