Joe Joyce beat Joseph Parker on Saturday night with a fabulous late knockout victory in Manchester. The WBO interim belt is now the Brit’s as he made himself a mandatory challenger to reigning world champion Oleksandr Usyk.
A fascinating, gruelling battle was delivered, as expected in boxing’s blue-riband division, with Joyce announcng his prominence after a signature win over Daniel Dubois in 2020 was followed by a frustrating arm injury and two low-key stoppages. New Zealand’s ex-WBO champion Parker was confident having taken back-to-back victories over Derek Chisora but was comfortably beaten at the AO Arena after failing to deal with Joyce’s sheer power.
A long undercard was capped by Amanda Serrano beating Sarah Mahfoud to unify the women’s featherweight titles. Anthony Cacace won his first world title belt with a split-decision victory over Michael Magnese before the popular Nathan Heaney took a premature unanimous verdict in front of his Stoke faithful after a nasty cut called off his fight with Jack Flatley.
