Joy for Rutherglen's Thomas Cook employees after Hays Travel buys up shops

Rutherglen jobs have been saved after Hays Travel purchased all of Thomas Cook's stores throughout the country - including the Rutherglen Main Street branch.

Staff confirmed the news that they would be back in business in the town soon in a Facebook post last night.

Gaby Wilson, who was one of three employees in the Thomas Cook store facing redundancy, posted: "I’m delighted to let you all know we will be opening a store in Rutherglen .

"The team will be home working until our store is ready to open. Massively excited - Hays already seem like an amazing company to be part of.

"We will have a Facebook page filled with offers and will be ready to take bookings in no time. We would love you to like our page when it’s up and running.

"Thanks to everyone for all your support over the last few weeks."

Hays Travel is a private company, jointly owned and managed by managing director John Hays and chair Irene Hays. The 40-year-old firm based in Sunderland in north-east England reached sales of more than 1 billion pounds in 2018.

The move has seen them acquire all 555 stores from the defunct Thomas Cook company.

The travel operator's sudden liquidation last month saw 150,000 holidaymakers stranded abroad as a result.
