Joy for Rangers as Matthew Shiels keeps Hong Kong tournament glory bid alive

Rangers' academy side are celebrating after Matthew Shiels fired Rangers into the last eight of the Hong Kong soccer sevens.

The Ibrox stars of tomorrow are competing in the tournament after finishing runners-up last year and are eyeing going one better in 2019.

Rangers made a perfect start with a 3-1 win over Hong Kong Soccer as Kai Kennedy, Cammy Palmer and Josh McPake got themselves on the scoresheet.

The Ibrox side then showed their mettle after securing a 0-0 draw with Wolves before Shiels swept home to fire Rangers into the last eight after denying HKFA Red Dragons.

The Premiership side's academy chief Craig Mulholland spoke recently about the importance of the tournament in helping develop the stars of tomorrow to help boost Steven Gerrard and the first team.

He said: "Visiting Hong Kong is a key highlight of the year on our Academy calendar and the young players get so much from the event both from a football perspective, but also culturally by visiting one of the world’s must-see locations.

“Just two years ago, we reached the semi-final, last year we lost to Newcastle in the final so this year we hope to go one step further.”
