Joy for Dublin couple as mum gives birth to identical triplets on New Year's Day

A Dublin couple really kicked off the New Year with a bang when a mother with just one ovary gave birth to identical triplets - a week before she was due.

Annmarie Byrne-Ryan and David Ryan were overjoyed when Annmarie gave birth to the trio of boys which is a "one in one million" chance according to the Master of the Rotunda Hospital, Professor Fergal Malone.

The babies - who are currently unnamed - were born before 12pm on New Year's Day in the Rotunda Hospital.

Speaking to RTE's Morning Ireland, Annmarie said she was "tired" having not slept but both she and the boys are doing well.

She said: "They're doing well. I’ve yet to see all three together. We're still trying to pick names, I had names picked but I've changed my mind so we're back to the Google searches."

"David’s been up and down, back and forward to the NICU ward taking loads of pictures, keeping me updated. So I’m anxious myself to get down to see them.

"[I'm in] a little bit of pain, but no I’m okay, I’m just relieved they’re here, they’re healthy and all is good at the moment anyway, thank God."

Annmarie was scheduled to have the babies on 8 January but her waters broke shortly after the start of the new decade.

When she found out they were having triplets, Annemarie said "it was very much a shock".

She added: "Because it wasn't planned. We got married at the end of April and went on honeymoon to Dubrovnik in May, and where most people come back with fridge magnets, myself and David brought home triplets.

"So we were in shock about that and we didn’t even know we were having them obviously until I had a bit of a bleed nine or ten weeks in and we came into the hospital and we found out then.

"Then it was even more of a shock to find out they were identical.

"We found out later down the line that they were identical – I think it was maybe three or four months. I have only one ovary myself because I had an operation and had an ovary removed in this hospital when I was 18. So they were baffled with that as well."

Annmarie joked that she already had "built-in babysitters" in their older children, David's son Jordan and Annmarie's daughter Shauna, both of whom are 18.

Professor Malone added that Annmarie is "very impressive and she's doing so well".

In total, 23 babies were born at the Rotunda on New Year's Day.
