Joy for Bradley Lowery's mum as she celebrates birth of baby girl

The mum of an inspirational boy who died of cancer has given birth to a baby girl.

Gemma and Carl Lowery welcomed Gracie-Mae at 12.19am on November 6.

She was born via emergency cesarian at Sunderland Royal hospital and is believed to be doing well , ChronicleLive reports.

In a Facebook post, Gemma said she "didn't have the best of labour", but their daughter was now "doing amazing".

When the parents first announced the pregnancy, they also paid tribute to their son Bradley who died in July 2017 saying he is the "guardian angel to his little brother or sister".

Bradley, who captured the hearts of the nation, died in July 2017 aged six (PA)

Sunderland fan Bradley was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer found mainly in babies and young children, at the age of just 18 months.

The six-year-old captured the hearts of the nation and he struck up a friendship with then Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe and was a mascot for Sunderland.

Bradley was even named joint winner of the December 2016 BBC Goal of the Month for a penalty he took against Chelsea.

The couple's post read: "Hi everyone just an update to welcome our beautiful little princess to the world.

"Gracie-Mae was born 12:19am on 6th November weighing 8lb.

"I didn't have the best of labour but I'll not bore you all with the details. I had to have an emergency C section as her heart rate dropped and they needed her out.

"She is now doing amazing and we are on our way home.

"I want to say a huge shout out to all the staff on the maternity unit at Sunderland Royal hospital. Every single one of them from start of care when I fell pregnant to leaving tonight have been incredible.

"Myself and Carl are going to now enjoy some family time with our beautiful princess.

"I know everyone will be eager to see her, and I’ll be sharing some pictures soon, but we want all the family to meet her first. Thank you all for your support."

In September, two streets were named in honour of Bradley.

Bradley Lowery Way leading to Sunshine Place is part of the new Hardwicke Place development in Blackhall Colliery, County Durham, close to his family's home.

Sunshine was the nickname Gemma and husband Carl gave Bradley, due to his sunny disposition despite the pain and discomfort he was suffering throughout his illness.
