Joy for Anton Haskins, disappointment for Dan Sarkozi in fight night packed with Bristol talent

Anton Haskins was one of a number of Bristolian boxers on show on Saturday, and beat Daniel Alder by TKO at the Whitchurch Action Indoor Sports Area.

The son of former Bantamweight World Champion Lee Haskins was fighting in just his second professional fight and showed good form to record his second win in two fights.

Fellow Bristolian Dan Sarkozi, who was fighting in his third professional fight since having heart surgery after a stroke in 2017, lost his fight on points to Nathan Hardy.

The main fight of the night saw light-heavyweight Pawel August secure the Southern Area crown with a brutal knockout at the Whitchurch Action Indoor Sports Area on Saturday.

August grew into his 10-round contest before eventually getting the better of his opponent, Jordan Joseph, as he battered the 24-year-old with a barrage of shots before the referee Mark Bates called an end to the contest a minute into the sixth round.

Elsewhere, a whole host of other Bristol boxers also featured on the card, as Aaron Sutton, George Pawley, Ben Demmery and Jake Demmery joined Haskins and Sarkozi on the card.

Welshman Lloyd Germain boxed well to overcome Paul Cummings, despite having a cut over his left eye that required stitches, while 22-year-old Jake Tinklin showed great composure to out point Naheem Chaudhry.

The Sanigar Events card also threw up a few surprise results, as Dan Sarkozi and Tyler Davies both suffered defeats, losing on points to Nathan Hardy and Stuart Greener respectively.

Reflecting on the show, Head of Events at Sanigar Events, Jamie Sanigar says he’s happy to see Taunton’s August flourish in his first 10-round contest.

“I think Pawel was the favourite going into the fight, but I had heard that Joseph had a really good camp,” he said.

“Jordan didn’t come to just make up the numbers, they were very much up for it and I think it was a very tactical fight.

“It was Pawel’s first 10 round fight so he was trying to pace himself a little bit, he was mature in the way he approached the fight.

“He took the time to work Jordan out and that’s what he did – Pawel found the opening and that’s what good fighters do.

“Going into that sixth round the fight was up for grabs and there was nothing in it, but Pawel took control.”

Despite a mixed bag of results for the local fighters, Sanigar insists the best is yet to come from his current crop of talent.

“At the moment we are concentrating on trying to get the younger lads up to championship level,” he added.

“We have a good crop of talent coming through and they’re all working off of each other which is great to see.

“It’s a good time for boxing in Bristol and I suppose it’s the next generation after Lee Haskins,

"They’ve now got to on the mantle of who is going to be the flagship fighter for the West Country.”
