Joy as project to improve Cleland station is finally completed

Work has finally been completed on a project to improve access to Cleland Train Station.

The scheme aimed to create step-free access across the station as part of the Shotts line electrification project and to improve access at Cleland for people with impaired mobility or those travelling with luggage, children or cycles.

A new accessible footbridge was constructed which included lifts and stairs.

Work had been scheduled to be completed in March however it was finally completed earlier this month.

Cleland councillor Louise Roarty said: “I personally want to thank the team at Network Rail in achieving this fantastic facility as we now have step-free access with the lifts being in commission from Saturday, October 5. I have campaigned for this access for a number of years and delighted with the no expense spared outcome.”

Matthew Spence, route delivery director for Network Rail Scotland, added: “We are continuously seeking opportunities to make our stations more accessible.

“This bridge ensures that everyone in the community has the opportunity to easily access services at Cleland Station and thus enable even more people to travel by train.”
