'Joxer Goes to Stuttgart' singer Christy Moore pays warm tribute to Jack Charlton

The man who jokingly imagined Joxer "sticking the head on" Jack Charlton paid a warm tribute after the death of the former Ireland boss.

Folk legend Christy Moore penned the song "Joxer Goes to Stuttgart" after the heroics of 'Jackie's Army' at the 1988 European Championships in Germany.

Following the journey of groups of fans who set off from Ireland for the big tournament, it includes the character Joxer having a dream where he picks the team with Charlton for Ireland's historic clash with England.

But as Moore, to the tune of Match of the Day, sang: "tempers they began to rise, patience wearing thin, Jack wanted Cascarino, but Joxer wanted Quinn.

"And the dream turned into a nightmare, Joxer stuck the head on Jack, who wanted to bring Johnny Giles and Eamon Dunphy back."

The song remains a crowd favourite at Moore concerts to this day and the 75-year-old has paid tribute to the man who died aged 85 last Friday after winning a World Cup with England and setting football mania in motion in Ireland.

"A larger than life man in both physical stature and emotional presence," wrote Moore on his website.

"I got to sing “Joxer” in his presence twice, to shake his hand once.

"I remember 1966 [World Cup] so well.  I watched the World Cup final through the window of a TV shop in Norwich. I was 'well nourished' at the time..

"I got to see him in Elland Road a few times too with [Billy] Bremner, [John] Giles, [Allan] Clarke, [Peter] Lorimer et al.back in my Halifax days.

"My abiding memory of Jack will always be of him standing in The River Moy in Ballina as he gently laid his line out upon the trout filled waters.

"I played in Ashington too [where Charlton grew up] back in them glory days."
