Journey to Le Mans review – workmanlike motorsport documentary

Journey to Le Mans
Like a Eurosport segment … Journey to Le Mans

A brisk documentary chroncling a tilt at last year’s 24-hour Le Mans race, the blue riband of endurance motorsport. We are in the cockpit with the Jota Sport team, run by accountant-turned-petrolhead Simon Dolan, who takes on his share of the race driving, along with his younger colleagues. It’s put together in workmanlike fashion by director Charlotte Fantelli, with much recourse to added-on commentary and the odd sonorous voiceover from Patrick Stewart, with perhaps a few too many shots of pit-lane girls in microshorts. In truth, despite the odd prang and the undoubted risks that the racers take, this doesn’t come across as that dramatic a story, a bit like an extra-long segment on Eurosport. But it’s accessible enough, and shines a light on a racing environment a notch less glamorous than Formula One.
