The expulsion of reporters from Guantanamo Bay has led to widespread condemnation in the largest and most influential US newspapers. Writers in the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times derided the move and a spokesman for one journalism body, the Society of Professional Journalists, issued a harsh statement. Charles N. Davis said: "This is the sort of banana-republic intimidation of the press we sneer at when it occurs on other points on the globe.
