Jota to Nottingham Forest: Set to leave Benfica, praised by Bernardo Silva, work rate shines

Not for the first time, Nottingham Forest are being linked with a move for Jota.

The Benfica forward is rated as one of the most exciting talents in his homeland, but he looks likely to play his football elsewhere next season.

Here, we take a look at why he is so highly rated and what the chances are of a move to the City Ground.

What's his background?

The 21-year-old has been with the Portuguese giants for his entire career, including youth football.

When Portugal won the Under-19s European Championships two years ago, he finished joint top-scorer with five goals, form which saw him named in the team of the tournament and alerted English clubs to his availability.

He’s represented his country at every level from Under-15s to Under-21s and his contract at the Stadium of Light reportedly runs until 2024.

How highly is he rated?

Jota has consistently been touted as one of Benfica's best young players with Bernardo Silva saying he would to like to see the forward come to Manchester City.

"It is very good the bet that Benfica has made on youngsters, from Ferro, Joao Felix, Florentino [Luis], to Jota, who has played less. I wish I could take the youngsters from Benfica to Manchester. They are all very good," he said.

He has often been mentioned in the same breath as Joao Felix, the Atletico Madrid star and his former Benfica team-mate.

However, Jota has failed to push on since being promoted to Benfica's first team squad last year, playing 28 times last season. Most of those were late appearances as a substitute as he scored twice and added two assists.

How does he play?

Jota can play on either flank or as a support striker.

A scouting report by Total Football Analysis highlights his dribbling ability as he registered the second most dribbles per 90 minutes in the Portuguese top flight last season and the third most progressive runs.

He is also praised for his passing ability as well as his defensive work rate and high number of recovery runs to support his full-back, which would bode well for the physical demands of the Championship.

What next?

The arrivals of Pedrinho and Everton at Benfica have pushed Jota down the pecking order, making a move away a stronger possibility.

A loan move looks most likely with Portuguese outlets Record and OJOGO saying Forest are keen, as well as Greek journalist Antonis Oikonomidis.

A move to Forest would make sense considering the need to add a winger to the squad. They brought in Adama Diakhaby on loan in January, but he failed to impress and has returned to Huddersfield.

Jacob Murphy has also been tipped for a move, but if Forest are to land Jota they would face competition from England and Spain according to OJOGO.

The Reds do though have strong connections with Benfica having signed Joao Carvalho and Diogo Goncalves from them in recent years, which could give them an advantage.
