Jota is set for Celtic megastardom under Brendan Rodgers as 3 Parkhead heroes show what he can become - Hotline

The Tartan Army have been hailing Steve Clarke and his men after stealing a march on the road to Germany. But now the dust has settled on a momentous week for the national side, the punters have turned their attention to some of the unsung Hampden heroes.

We’ve had Super John McGinn, Brilliant Billy Gilmour and Sensational Scotty McTominay. Let’s have a shout out for the legendary Hampden ground staff and perfect Ryan Porteous. The volunteers helped clear the pitch to pace the way to victory against Georgia while the big defender helped mop up at the back in the winning double header.

Neil Renton, Edinburgh, said: “One of the many highlights of Scotland’s recent results has been the performances of Porteous. The former Hibs defender is proving all his doubters wrong. He could easily walk into either one of the Old Firm sides. Kenny Earle emailed: “We mustn't forget that this match could not have gone ahead without the valiant efforts of the ground staff and volunteers at Hampden Park. These unseen people give up their time without looking for any financial gain and I hope that everyone, from the SFA to the supporters and players, recognise their efforts. Well done to each and every one of them.”

John Kirkwood emailed: “Billy Thomson should get his facts right – it was UEFA that told them to continue, not the SFA.” But doom merchant Danny McLean, Glasgow, said: “I had to laugh at Stephen Johnstone’s Hotline call about the Group of Death including Cyprus, Georgia and Norway. I don’t think so. Plus that game should have been abandoned.”

Talk about raining on the parade.

Meanwhile, Celtic fans are on board with Brendan Rodgers making a Parkhead comeback and some are already thinking about how he’ll improve their favourites. Paul McCormack, Coatbridge, said: “The best man for the job got the job. Well done to the board for getting the number one target in the building. There are exciting times ahead for Celtic fans. The likes of Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney improved massively working with Rodgers last time. Jota, for one, could be an incredible player for us if he's able to kick on under him.”

But with every ying there’s a yang and Paddy Gowans, via email, said: “Ange Postecoglou is worse than Brendan, he wanted to take all the backroom staff as well. Man with two faces.”

Speaking of the coaches, Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “So Celtic had the chance of getting rid of John Kennedy to Spurs and Gavin Strachan to the English giants Shrewsbury and they didn’t take it. Rodgers is a great signing but with that pair of duds sitting in the dugout, forget Europe. I won’t be renewing my season ticket.”

We’re sure there will be plenty of others wanting to take it mind you, given these so-called duds have polished more silverware than a royal butler.
