Jota and the Celtic transfer set amid Benfica civil war as raging fans get creative to force manager out

It might be hard to believe but Jorge Jesus and his under-fire Benfica side are potentially one win away from a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Yes, a victory over Dynamo Kiev couple with Barcelona failing to beat Bayern Munich will see the Portuguese big-hitters into the knockout stages.

But darks clouds are circling over the Stadium of Light after Friday's 3-1 defeat at the hands of great rivals Sporting.

The loss lit the blue touch paper among a support who remain wholly unconvinced their manager is the man capable of competing for a titles in his second spell.

Jesus is no slouch, of that there is no doubt, with three league triumphs and two Europa League Final appearances during his first stint at the Estadio De Luz.

But supporters have long-held frustration with the Brazilian and that is over his promotion of some of the academy's brightest lights.

Manchester City star pair Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva are among the talents who have failed to be handed their chances under his stewardship.

And now a large contingent of Benfica fans are vexed amid Jota's all-conquering displays with Celtic during his wildly-successful loan stint in Glasgow.

The anger comes in two forms - the lack of opportunity the 22-year-old has been offered overall, coupled by the fact the club are short of wingers.

Celtic and the player himself hold the aces - with the Premiership title challengers primed to activate an attractive looking £6.5m option to buy.

Benfica supporters crave homegrown stars and the success of Jota is further proof, in their eyes, that something is wrong with how the club are developing their own.

They were third best last season and look off the pace again, and that shaky form has led to peeved-off punters to launch a website in a bid to send Jesus back to former club Flamengo in Brazil.

Each click sends him a step closer to South America and has currently passed Africa as punters send sparks off their keyboard to get their man out.

Jota impressed with Real Valladolid last season, but he has matured with Celtic and has arguably been the best player in the Premiership since his arrival.

Followers of Benfica have issues with the current regime that go beyond Jota and others who have not been awarded a chance, but the current malaise in Lisbon is timely remember of the importance of promoting from within.

And Celtic are delighted with how things have unfolded.
