Joshua Dobbs rated as 25th best backup quarterback by CBS Sports

The backup quarterback has always been one of the most overlooked positions in football. Teams never know how much you need a serviceable backup until the starter gets hurt and if their plan B isn’t serviceable it could cost them important games.

CBS Sports recently released their backup quarterback power rankings and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Joshua Dobbs found himself at No. 25 according to writer Sean Warner-McGough:

25. Jaguars’ Joshua Dobbs

Dobbs spent part of his offseason working at NASA. He majored in aerospace engineering at the University of Tennessee. I bring this up because Dobbs appears to have a very bright future after football. As for his future in football, it’s still unclear. He’s only thrown 12 passes in his entire career. That makes him better than the options listed before him. We know they’re bad quarterbacks. We suspect Dobbs isn’t good, but we don’t know for certain.

Dobbs will look to be the Jags’ backup quarterback behind Gardner Minshew II for a second year and will have to battle new free agent addition Mike Glennon this preseason to get the job. Dobbs was brought over in a trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth-round pick in 2019 after only seeing five games total of NFL action in 2018. Dobbs completed only six passes out of 12 for 43 yards during that time.

While the football world isn’t too sold on the Jaguars’ quarterback depth, they still ranked higher than teams such as the Seattle Seahawks, the Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings, all of which were teams that made the playoffs last season. Dobbs is still pretty young at 25 years of age, so time may only tell if he can fully transition into being a solid backup for the Jags.
