Josh Windass in salary cut jibe as former Rangers man hits back at Health Secretary

Former Rangers winger Josh Windass has hit back at Health Secretary Matt Hancock over his calls for footballers to slash their wages.

The minister urged players to "take a cut, play your part" during the coronavirus crisis but that statement has come in for criticism.

Many have pointed out that his statement removes responsibility from clubs and their wealthy owners, and that a similar statement wasn't made about other industries or the royal family.

Windass was among those unimpressed by Hancock's comments.

The former Rangers player wrote on Twitter: "Marcus Rashford has paid for 400 thousand people to be fed in Manchester.

"That’s more than all Matt Hancock's hedge funded mates have done, I’m sure?"

Many clubs have placed their non-playing staff on furlough, with the government paying 80 per cent of salary up to £2,500 per month.

Top clubs on the continent such as Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have already negotiated wage cuts or deferrals with their players.
