Josh Warrington rues 'typical' Leeds United luck and outlines what is needed when football returns

Josh Warrington has lamented Leeds United's 'typical' bad luck after the season was suspended with his side at the top of the Championship table.

All professional football in this country has been postponed until at least April 30, as the Premier League and EFL suspended their season indefinitely last week in their latest response to the coronavirus pandemic.

That means the Championship campaign has been put into hibernation with Leeds a point clear of West Brom and five ahead of third-placed Fulham with nine games remaining, as the country continues to shut down in order to try and combat the virus.

"It's typical Leeds United," said the IBF featherweight world champion. "It could only happen to us.

"But we're in a very good position, we've just got to make sure that by the time that everyone gets back to playing again that we keep that momentum because we were flying.

"Sometimes when new seasons start again teams are all over the place. Lets just hope that Leeds have a good bit of momentum when things get kicking off and the other teams that are struggling haven't recharged too much and they can knock us off course.

"I'm confident that as soon as it gets going again we'll secure ourselves in the Premier League."

This comes after Warrington told our sister title The People that he has been able to give fans in Leeds their best night's since the European adventures of David O'Leary's side.

"Lads my age remember Leeds in Europe, but they don't remember the glory days in the 1970s. They have to listen to the stories their dads and uncles tell them," he said.

"We were too young to experience it, and Leeds United aren't a giant club any more. Fans are wondering: 'Will I ever get to experience what my dad experienced?' "Lads who have lost heart in the football and rugby clubs, and want to cheer on a local lad who is trying to achieve things, have got behind me. I have made an impact on a lot of people's lives.

"Lads tell me they met their girlfriends and wives at one of my fights. I have given Leeds fans some glory nights."
