Josh Warrington plots US career launch ahead of Mauricio Lara trilogy fight

Josh Warrington has vowed to emulate Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe and take his career over to America in a clash before his trilogy bout with Mauricio Lara.

The 'Leeds Warrior' was forced to wait to get his revenge after his rematch with Lara ended in a technical draw due to a nasty cut opening up above the Mexican's eye after a clash of heads.

With a huge following domestically in Leeds in attendance on Saturday night, he was able to go toe-to-toe with the Mexican before the fight was stopped and has vowed to relaunch his path to the top.

But the 30-year-old has planned to fight in America before any trilogy bout with Lara to prevent "inactivity" plaguing his revenge bid against his rival.

“I’d love to go to the States," Warrington told talkSPORT. “I grew up watching Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe go over there.

“It’s just for the experience more than anything and to give my following the chance to be out there with me as well.

“Obviously I’m thinking, ‘Third fight, it has to be, clean my slate, beat every man I’ve stepped in the ring with.'

“Inactivity’s not good for anybody, you need to be out as often as you can. I’ll sit down with the team and see what we can come up with, I think I’ve made it clear that I’d love to fight in the States.

Warrington has defeated the likes of Carl Frampton and Kid Galahad during his illustrious career with the fight against Lara presenting a 'make-or-break' situation for his fighting future.

But the Leeds fighter was "frustrated" with the fight being stopped early due to the cut, as he felt "switched on" by the electrifying ring-walk.

That ring walk was something else, I think that’s why I’m probably more frustrated than anything," Warrington continued. “I wanted to deliver a performance to match that ring walk.

“It was only six minutes of action that we had.

“But after the first round I almost said to my old fella in the corner, ‘How did I get knocked out by this guy?’

“I just felt like my normal self, I felt like I was back. I was switched on, fully switched on.

“We had a game plan and I think the first round played out in my hands perfectly, the second round he was getting a bit more excited, coming forwards more, I was excited to see how the next few rounds were gonna go, but obviously it wasn’t to be.”

Warrington drew comparisons of his revenge attempt to British heavyweight Anthony Joshua ahead of the fight, who regained his world titles with rematch victory over Andy Ruiz.

Elsewhere on the card, talented welterweight Conor Benn defeated Adrian Granados in his rescheduled clash with a tough test which he won by unanimous decision.

Irish star Katie Taylor also successfully defended her undisputed lightweight title once again, with victory over Jennifer Han which could set up a rematch with undisputed champion Jessica McCaskill.
