Josh van der Flier among nine changes for Leinster against Glasgow as he is released from Ireland duty

Josh van der Flier comes straight into the Leinster side that faces Glasgow at the RDS on Sunday (5.30pm) after he was left out of the Ireland squad for the Six Nations clash with Italy.

Van der Flier started against Wales and France in the last two championship outings but Tadhg Beirne has got the nod for the openside position at Test level this week.

Jack Conan was Leinster's man of the match last week against Dragons but is on the bench for Ireland in Rome.

And, with van der Flier's inclusion at no 7 having been released back to the Blues, prolific try-scorer Scott Penny moves to no 8 for the first time in his senior career.

Luke McGrath captains the Blues and Harry Byrne retains the out-half role in a side that sees nine line-up changes from last week, including five in the pack.

Although Byrne's brother Ross, who played in the centre against the Dragons, is not involved in the matchday squad for Ireland, the no 12 jersey goes to Ciaran Frawley, who has recovered from a minor shoulder injury. Rory O’Loughlin is outside him at 13.

The second row is fully changed as Ryan Baird is also on Ireland's bench while Devin Toner and Scott Fardy return for the province.

Back row Alex Soroka, 20, is in line to make his Blues debut off the bench after playing twice for the Ireland under-20s in last year's cancelled campaign.

Jimmy O'Brien has recovered from a hamstring injury that he suffered last month against Munster to start at full-back.

"I think Glasgow has always been a very tough opposition to play against," said Leinster attack coach Felipe Contepomi.

"I think they're a great team - a very, very good team in attack with a lot of physicality, and also in defence.

"They feel comfortable coming here to the RDS because they beat us here two years ago. I think it is a great opportunity for us to improve what we have done the last weekend, and to focus on our performance and trying to get better.

"Because it is one of those teams you want to play against because you know they’ll bring, as (Dave) Rennie used to say, brutality into their game.

"And it’s physicality. It’s good we are looking forward to that challenge. Definitely."

Glasgow boss Danny Wilson said: “It’s unfortunate the Scotland game has been postponed, but we’re pleased to welcome some of our Scotland boys back and to be able to give them game time.

"We’ve named an exciting back line blending our experienced internationals with a young, promising back three.

“We reward performance, and Cole (Forbes) and Gregor (Brown) have both impressed in training and have earned the opportunity to make their debut. Leinster are the in-form side in the competition.

"We need to match their speed in defence and attack and take our chances in their 22 if we want to walk away with a win.”
