Josh Taylor threatened by Conor Benn as banned boxer makes 'third defeat' dig after Teofimo Lopez loss

Conor Benn has called out Josh Taylor, threatening to inflict a “third” defeat of the Scots fighters career.

Taylor suffered his first official loss in New York last week after he was outfought by Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden, with the Brooklyn native taking the Edinburgh man’s WBO Super Lightweight belt off him in a unanimous decision. There’s now talk that Taylor will move up in weight to 147, although he may have to bide his time for any more world title fights.

Benn could be an option though, as the son of former British boxing star Nigel took to social media in order to ant Taylor not to “play” with him. Benn’s reference to a third defeat was a dig over Taylor’s controversial points decision against Jack Catterall last year. The Tartan Tornado won despite many believing Catterall had done more than enough to come out on top. Demands for a rematch fell on deaf ears, although the chances may now have increased after the defeat by Lopez.

But it seems Benn is first in line. In an Instagram post post, he said: "@joshtaylorbox1 I’d happily give you your third defeat on the spin. Don’t play with me.”

Benn is understood be close to agreeing to fight Chris Eubank Junior after their planned clash last year had to be canned. Benn failed two drug tests and currently is provisionally suspended by the UK Anti Doping Agency.

Under British Boxing Board of Control rules, he is unable to fight in the UK. And they have warned that any fighter or trainer who works with a suspended athlete abroad could face sanctions. That could scupper plans for the pair to fight in the Middle East.

Taylor has a long-held ambition to potentially fight at Edinburgh Castle. Hibs' Easter Road Stadium is another possible venue as he considers his next move.
