Josh Taylor's Top Rank deal slammed by Barry McGuigan's Cyclone Promotions as they make contract claim

Barry McGuigan's Cyclone Promotions have slammed Josh Taylor over his decision to join forces with American heavyweights Top Rank.

The 28-year-old has penned a multi-year deal with Bob Arum's stable with the Tartan Tornado set to make his debut on ESPN in the coming months.

Irish boxing legend McGuigan has been Taylor's promoter and mentor since he turned professional in the wake of his Commonwealth gold medal triumph at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

But the promotional company have been left angered by the their main man's call to up sticks and claim the World Boxing Super Series champion remains under an "exclusive worldwide promotional contract" with them.

The unified light-welterweight champion, fresh off his win over Regis Prograis , is poised for money-spinning clashes with the likes of Jose Ramirez and welterweight kingpin Terence Crawford in the coming years.

And the departure means Taylor's partnership with trainer Shane McGuigan, son of the Clones Cyclone, could come to an end due to the acrimonious exit of their world Boxing star.

The statement read: "We are very disappointed to read the news that Josh Taylor has signed a promotional agreement with another promotional company.

"Josh Taylor is under an exclusive worldwide promotional contract with Cyclone Promotions.

"We have successfully brought Josh to the pinnacle of the sport from the day that he turned professional, including working alongside other stakeholders in boxing to deliver him to the biggest fights.

"More recently, Josh became IBF world champion in May 2019 then unified champion in October 2019, and we have been working since then to plan the next stage of his career.

"We are saddened that Josh has felt the need to attempt to break his contract in this manner and frustrated at those who have caused him to do so."
