Josh Taylor forced to pull out of Jack Catterall showdown after knee injury

Josh Taylor has been forced to pull out of his scheduled title defence against Jack Catterall after suffering an injury.

The Tartan Tornado had been slated for a homecoming fight against the undefeated Englishman at the Hydro on December 18.

The 30-year-old conquered Jose Ramirez to add the WBC and WBO light-welterweight titles to his WBA, IBF, and Ring magazine championships in May.

It meant the Prestonpans-born fighter emulated the great Ken Buchanan by becoming the undisputed light-welterweight champion.

However, his UK comeback has now been pushed back until February 2022 following a knee ligament injury suffered in training for the bout.

Posting on Instagram, the disheartened Taylor wrote: “I’m gutted I won’t be able to defend my title on December 18 as originally planned, but I wanted to make sure I was 100 per cent healthy to give my incredible fans the show they deserve.

“This homecoming has been a long time in the making, and it will be worth the wait. I will see everyone on February 26.”

Catterall, who is 26-0 in his career with 13 knockouts, shared his frustrations on Twitter, but promised fans an epic showdown when the pair eventually square off on February 26.

The 28-year-old, known as El Gato, wrote: "Everything happens for a reason! I am gutted not just for me but for everyone who had planned to go.

"I will remain professional and continue working for the new date.

"2022, I will be world champion. Obstacles like this are nothing new for me. I will turn frustration into positive energy."
