Josh Taylor could perform surprise super lightweight U-turn for Jose Zepeda unified title defence

Josh Taylor could perform surprise super lightweight U-turn for Jose Zepeda unified title defence

Josh Taylor could perform a surprise u-turn and stay at super lightweight for a unified title defence against Jose Zepeda.

Promoters Top Rank, who represent both fighters, have confirmed that talks are underway with both camps in a bid to agree a bout.

Taylor admitted after his controversial undisputed points win over Jack Catterall in February that he was set to step up to 147lbs because he was struggling to make the weight at super lightweight.

Taylor even vacated his WBA belt last week because he was not interested in fulfilling a mandatory fight against Alberto Puello.

Zepeda (35-2) is the WBC mandatory challenger and Top Rank president Todd Duboef admits the Tartan Tornado could still hang around at 140lbs.

He said: “Zepeda is coming off a fight of the year performance against Ivan Baranchyk and a first-round KO of Josue Vargas in October.

"These together have earned him the mandatory position to Josh's WBC crown.

"We are working with both teams to put this fight on next."
