Josh Tapper: Former Gogglebox star selected as Labour candidate to take on Deputy Prime Minister

A former Gogglebox star has been selected to challenge deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden for his seat at the next election.

Josh Tapper, who appeared on the hit reality TV show alongside his family, will contest Hertsmere for Labour.

However, the 26-year-old account manager will face a challenge to overturn Mr Dowden’s 16,951 majority.

Labour placed second in the constituency at the last election, winning around 11,000 votes.

Announcing the news on social media, Mr Tapper said he was “thrilled and honoured” to have been picked as the candidate.

“Thank you so much to local members for your support - I won’t let you down,” he said.

“The work to unseat the Deputy Prime Minister starts now!”

Tapper featured on the Channel 4 show alongside dad Jonathan, mum Nikki and sister Amy, but left screens in 2017.

He previously stood for selection in the North London seat of Chipping Barnet.

He is not the only famous face hoping to become an MP at the next election, with Blur drummer Dave Rowntree also selected as a Labour candidate for the Tory seat of Mid-Sussex.

A vote needs to be held by January 2025, but Rishi Sunak has indicated he will send the country to the polls in the second half of 2024, having ruled out coinciding it with the upcoming local contests in May.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt on Tuesday appeared to hint October is under consideration for a general election date.

However, the Tories are currently facing dire poll ratings, with rife speculation that rebel Conservative MPs are lining up potential successors to replace Mr Sunak should he face a no confidence challenge.
