Josh Norman says Redskins were winning Super Bowl if Alex Smith stayed healthy

Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman isn’t a stranger to big talk.

Norman, after all, has said he’s going to retire as soon as he wins a Super Bowl. But let Norman tell it, the Redskins would have done that this season if Alex Smith had been able to stay on the field.

TMZ caught up with Norman, who made his case in simple terms: “We win the Super Bowl…Why not?”

Hey, optimism is good, right?

The problem with Norman’s line of thinking is primarily the offense. Norman’s defense was solid for the most part until the offense struggled, which then led to a player even calling out coaches and getting cut.

But the offense centered on the run game, which fell apart when guys like Brandon Scherff started getting hurt. Alex Smith was never a game-changer for the Redskins while healthy, appearing in 10 games and completing 62.5 percent of his passes with just 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. He threw multiple touchdowns in a game just three times, matching the number of games he went without throwing one at all.

While the Redskins were NFC East leaders at one point, the wealth of injuries around Smith — had he stayed healthy — were going to make it hard for the Redskins to win the division, let alone make a deep playoff push.
