Josh McPake getting new Rangers deal ahead of completing season-long loan to Morecambe

Josh McPake is set to pen a new two-year contract at Rangers.

The teenage striker is set to join Morecambe on a season-long loan and his Ibrox deal is set to run out next summer.

But Steven Gerrard sees potential in McPake and is keen to get him tied down beyond then.

And it's understood that an extension is on the verge of being agreed that will keep him in Govan until 2024.

A temporary switch that would have given McPake Scottish Premiership experience looked to be on the cards earlier this summer with both Livingston and Motherwell keen on doing a deal.

But Morecambe have won the race, also beating off competition from Doncaster, Oldham and Tranmere Rovers.

The Shrimpers are now managed by ex-Well boss Stephen Robinson after he replaced Derek Adams, the former Ross County manager jumping ship to Bradford City.

McPake will be the Northern Irishman’s fifth signing of the summer.

The 19-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Harrogate Town and helped fire them to FA Trophy success, defeating Concord Rangers 1-0 in the final.

McPake netted four times in 23 appearances as they achieved a 17th-placed finish in League Two, securing their Football League status after their first ever campaign at that level.

The forward has also been loaned to Dundee and greenock Morton previously after making his Gers debut in a 2019 Europa League qualifying tie against St Joseph’s of Gibraltar.
