Josh McGuire leaves Warrington Wolves by mutual agreement after controversial spell

After racking up a massive 19 games worth of bans inside just five months, Aussie bad boy Josh McGuire’s Warrington Wolves career is officially over.

The club released a brief statement to confirm the former Kangaroos forward has headed home. McGuire, 33, only joined from St George Illawarra last autumn but his time in Super League has been dogged by controversy. The ex-Queensland State of Origin was sent off on his debut in a friendly against Leigh and subsequently banned for seven games for using unacceptable language related to disability.

McGuire finally made his Super League debut in the win at Catalans on April 8. But he then copped a huge 12-game ban for more unacceptable language, this time after allegedly making a slur to Josh Charnley about a member of the Leigh winger’s family in the match between the sides on May 26. McGuire also copped a £1,000 fine and it was inevitable his two-year contract would be ended early.

The ex-Brisbane loose forward played just seven times in total for Daryl Powell’s side. A club statement read: “Warrington Wolves can confirm that Josh McGuire has left the Club by mutual agreement with immediate effect. McGuire has now returned to Australia with his family. We wish Josh well in his next chapter.”

Warrington are joint-top of Super League but are currently out of form and were dumped out of the Challenge Cup by Wigan despite their opponents playing for most of the match with just 12 men. Wolves head to Castleford on Friday bidding to kick-start their campaign.
