Josh McDaniels would welcome another head coaching opportunity

As the New England Patriots 2020 season comes to a close, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels indicated on Tuesday he wanted another shot at a head coaching gig.

He has experience in the role. He spent a season and a half as the Denver Broncos head coach from 2009 to 2010. He was going to be the Indianapolis Colts head coach in the 2018 season, but backed out, staying with New England in his current role.

Despite backing out on Indianapolis, he has interviewed with the Green Bay Packers and the Cleveland Browns since then.

The offense has struggled this season, with the Patriots only scoring 19.9 points per contest. New England has added more quarterback run plays into their playbook for Cam Newton, but the results have been mixed and inconsistent.

“I definitely want to do that,” McDaniels said in a conference call one day after the Patriots lost to the Buffalo Bills 38-9 to fall to 6-9 on the season. “I’d love to have that opportunity if it presents itself.”

As New England enters an uncharacteristically long off-season, McDaniels will look to improve upon things for 2021.
