Josh Harris says Ben Roethlisberger fumbled intentionally in a game

I have to admit I was hesitant to talk about this situation when it first came out. In case you missed it, former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Josh Harris said on Twitter he believed Ben Roethlisberger intentionally fumbled the football late in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014.

Thankfully, since I had zero memory of the play, Harris shared the video of it as a follow-up. If you want to see it, search for his Twitter account. Harris claims in his discussion of the play the call was to go to him, not fullback Will Johnson. On the play, Roethlisberger tried to hand the ball off to Johnson, who definitely wasn’t expecting it. The ball went to the ground, and Harris recovered.

At this point, it’s basically Harris’ word against no one else’s. But this isn’t the biggest issue for me. Harris said at that moment he knew what kind of person Roethlisberger was. But he never clarifies what kind of person he’s talking about. If Big Ben did it intentionally to make then-offensive coordinator Todd Haley look foolish, what does it say about Roethlisberger?

Does it make Roethlisberger selfish? Maybe. It definitely makes him smarter than Haley. But in the big picture I don’t really think Harris told us anything at all, even if we assume he’s telling the truth.
