Josh Grant: No panic in the Bristol Rovers squad but it is time to produce against Leyton Orient

Bristol Rovers utility man Josh Grant insists there is no sense of panic in the ranks, despite the Pirates' poor start to the season.

But with the Gas hovering just above the League Two relegation zone after seven games against the backdrop of injuries to key players, the former Chelsea prospect has called on his teammates to transfer their development on the training pitches at The Quarters into improved performances on matchday.

Rovers host Leyton Orient at the Mem on Saturday with the visitors riding the momentum of a positive start under Kenny Jackett, but Grant believes Rovers should be fully focused on their business.

"If you look at their recent form, they’ve started well but I think it’s time to stop worrying about other teams," he said.

"We’ve got to start producing what we know we can do. We’ve got to stick to it and believe in it. I think that will help us a lot.

"The sooner we start, the better, but there’s no panic from us at all.

"We’re level-headed and we understand the difficulties that are coming at the minute, but we’re working towards it and hopefully we’re going to improve soon and the fans can see it because it’s coming off on the training pitch."

Rovers, after a complete overhaul in the summer, have hit the ground with an unceremonious thud in the fourth tier, falling to four defeats already.

Grant, one of the few survivors of last season's relegation, believes the early struggles are a natural part of the rebuilding process and an upturn in form is around the corner.

He continued: "When you change a group, as we have done this season, it's never going to be like that, but on the training pitch we can see it coming together and we need to get that little bit between the teeth and start producing on a matchday.

"In training, you can see things are coming off really well and we're starting to get those relationships with decent players and I think it's going to come together soon."

The 22-year-old has played in a wide variety of positions already this season, but predominantly in central midfield.

His manager, Joey Barton, believes Grant's best role is in defence, and the Londoner agrees – though he made clear he will play anywhere he is required for the team.

He added: "Over the years, I think my strongest position has been in defence, so right-back or the right side of a back three, I think that is more me.

"I'm learning midfield. I've only been playing a year and a half there and I'm enjoying it."
