Josh Doig nets Hibs £3million transfer fee as he completes Serie A move

Josh Doig has completed his move to Italy with Serie A outfit Hellas Verona as Hibs bank a £3millon transfer fee for the full-back.

The Easter Road defender has been a standout performer since bursting onto the scene at the capital club and went on to make just shy of 80 top team appearances. The 20-year-old has been in Italy since the weekend thrashing out terms on the deal and undergoing medical tests and he has now put pen to paper to make the move.

The Scotland Under-21 international started his youth career at city rivals Hearts before making the switch to Leith. He enjoyed a brief loan spell at Queen's Park back in 2020. Doig's rapid rise in the Hibs first-team was rewarded with the Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year award for the 2020/21 campaign. Lee Johnson has just arrived at Easter Road as he puts his stamp on the team. He's been very active in the transfer market to date bringing in the likes of David Marshall, Aiden McGeady and Jair Tavares as part of a major summer overhaul, but he won't get to work with Doig who has officially departed.

READ MORE: Josh Doig handed Cristiano Ronaldo comparison by Hibs team-mate who tips him to reach very top

A Hellas Verona club statement read: "Verona - Hellas Verona FC announces that they have acquired from Hibernian FC - definitively until 30 June 2026 - the right to sports performances of the Scottish defender Josh Doig.

"Hellas Verona FC gives Josh Doig a warm welcome, wishing him the best personal and team satisfaction in the yellow and blue jersey."

Hibs wrote on Twitter: We can confirm that Josh Doig has left Hibernian FC to join Serie A side Hellas Verona for a significant seven-figure deal.

"Everyone at Hibs would like to wish Josh all the best in Italy and thank him for his efforts in green and white. Good luck, @JoshDoig_"

Lewis Stevenson is in no doubt his former team-mate will succeed and play at the very top, he said: “Josh has potential to go to the top. He’s 6ft 3in, fast, strong.

“Even just looking at him with his top off — without meaning to sound creepy — he looks like Ronaldo, with that kind of physique.

“He’s just an athlete and that is half the battle nowadays.

“Everyone here wishes him all the best. He’s still the same guy he was when he first came in at 16 and trained with us.

“We have all been saying, although he got this move, we genuinely feel he could go from there and kick on again.”
