Josh Doig in emotional Hibs goodbye as he admits he'll miss Easter Road 'home'

Josh Doig has bid farewell to Easter Road in an emotional Hibs goodbye.

The defender has officially made the move to Italy to join Hellas Verona in a deal worth £3million. The 20-year-old signed a contract to keep him at the Serie A side until 2026, making him the latest Scots youngster to try his luck in Italy, after Aberdeen sold Lewis Ferguson to Bologna. Verona, managed by former Crawley Town boss Gabriele Cioffi, finished ninth in Serie A last season and now the Edinburgh born player takes on the task to help the side in the upcoming season.

Doig has enjoyed 78 outings for Hibs in total signs signing from city rivals Hearts in 2019. He went on to spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Queens Park before returning to Easter Road to really kick off his Hibs career during the following season, making his first team debut in August 2020 during a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock. His breakthrough season in Leith saw him named SFWA's Young Player of the Year before penning a long term deal with the club.

But his time in Edinburgh is over, for now, as he makes the move to Verona in time for the upcoming campaign. Despite the celebrations, the stopper is feeling quite emotional at the thought of leaving Hibs behind.

Speaking to Hibs TV before departing Easter Road, he said: "I'm a bit emotional to be fair. Obviously I have been here quite a bit of time now and I've absolutely loved it, this is my home. So to think if leaving now it is definitely emotional.

"There is a bit of nervous energy there as well, it's a massive move. Not just football wise but lifestyle wise as well. Moving over there it's a big leap but I think the only way you can really improve yourself is leaving that comfort zone and I think I will definitely be doing that. But hopefully in the long run it is the best decision."
