Josh Doig admits Hibs miss fear after bagging first senior goal against Hamilton

Josh Doig feared he’d missed just after he headed home his first senior goal.

The Hibs teenager was on target to put his team 2-0 up against ten-man Hamilton at Easter Road to maintain the gap over Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership table.

Martin Boyle’s opener after Jamie Hamilton’s early red card looked to have Jack Ross ’ men on easy street, but the winger’s missed penalty meant things weren’t quite so comfortable.

However, Doig eased the nerves by popping up and heading into an empty net after good work by Boyle out wide.

It may have been a simple finish, but it felt anything but for Doig as his heart made its way to his mouth after he watched where ball was heading after connecting with it.

“Honestly, it just bounced up too perfectly so I just shut my eyes and heidered it!,” he said. “I opened my eyes, saw it rising and was like ‘aw naw!’

“But luckily it went in and I was delighted. Absolutely over the moon.

“My first senior goal is something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life. It was big for my family as well. What a moment.”

Doig has established himself as a regular in green and white this season, and he says much of the credit should go to Ross.

“He’s been unbelievable,” he told Hibs TV. “He’s always talking to me and giving me information.

“He knows that I’m younger and it’s my first season. I’ve struggled a few times with my confidence and stuff but him, Pottsy [John Potter] and Sammy [Craig Samson] have been brilliant just to get me back up there.

“Every time Lewy [Stevenson] and Sackie [Sean Mackie] have come in they’ve been brilliant so I know I have to raise my game if I want to stay in the team.

“They’re such good left backs so it;s good to have the competition to drive your performances on.”
