Josh Doctson’s number of chances in 2019 remains up in the air

For those paying attention, it has been abundantly clear the Washington Redskins plan on spreading the ball around in 2019.

That equates to a mixed outlook for Josh Doctson within the confines of Jay Gruden’s offense.

And Gruden himself isn’t denying it, according to Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post: “I can’t promise he’s going to get a ton of opportunities with the group of guys that we have. The whole intent of this offense is to spread the ball around … and everybody taking advantage when their number is called.”

Doctson heads into a critical year after the team turned down his fifth-year option. Gruden has said in the past he’d like to see Doctson have a big year, of course.

But easier said than done. It is either Case Keenum or rookie Dwayne Haskins under center next year. Out of the backfield alone, quarterbacks figure to target Adrian Peterson, Derrius Guice and Chris Thompson, if not others. Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis are at tight end. Paul Richardson is still getting paid like a big contributor. The team expects big things from Trey Quinn and just drafted Terry McLaurin, too.

This isn’t saying Doctson won’t have a role. But he’ll have to find the right rapport with both quarterbacks over the summer or he might not be high on the target list on a weekly basis.
