Josh Dobbs has a challenge but familiarity could help him be prepared

The Arizona Cardinals acquired quarterback Josh Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns last week and he might be the Cardinals’ starting quarterback in Week 1.

He has not taken a single snap or had a single practice rep with the team yet.

“It’s never easy for a new guy coming into a new team but he’s familiar with the system he’s familiar with Drew (offensive coordinator Drew Petzing) and Iz (quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork) and we feel good where he’s at with that,” head coach Jonathan Gannon said on Monday.

Gannon raved about his football character and his intelligence.

What does he bring to the huddle?

“He’s a mobile guy that understands the system,” he said. “He’s a mobile guy that can make throws and play in the pocket and play outside of the pocket, so that’s what we are looking for.”

Dobbs spent most of last season with the Cleveland Browns, where Petzing was quarterbacks coach and Woolfork also worked with the quarterbacks.

He started two games late in the season after he joined the Tennessee Titans.

He has been in the league since 2017 but only has those two starts and has played in only eight career games.

While the Cardinals will not name the starting quarterback before their Week 1 game against the Washington Commanders, it would appear that the plan is for Dobbs to be the guy. Gannon spoke of having a plan in place and that is usually something you would have for a guy needing to be brought up to speed.

Rookie Clayton Tune has been working in the system ever since he was drafted in April.
