Josh Cullen and Jason Knight call on FAI to resolve uncertainty over Stephen Kenny’s contract situation

Josh Cullen and Jason Knight have called on the FAI to resolve the uncertainty over Stephen Kenny’s contract situation.

The Republic of Ireland manager is tied to the association until July and intends leading the team into next year’s Nations League campaign and Euro 2024.

But the FAI board will meet this month to review the World Cup campaign, once the upcoming Portugal and Luxembourg qualifiers are out of the way

Barring a disaster away to Luxembourg on Sunday, Kenny is in a strong position to land a new deal.

But two of his key players have come out today and called on FAI chiefs to iron out the issue sooner rather than later.

Asked if he would like Kenny to sign a new contract, Anderlecht midfielder Josh Cullen said: “Yeah, percent.

“The progression that the team has shown over the last year or so and working together has been really enjoyable.

“I probably speak on behalf all of the lads that we’re fully behind the manager and believe in what he’s trying to do.

“We’re enjoying the style of football we’re playing and we’re starting to see the rewards results-wise, from the performances we’ve been putting in.

“For me, it’s a pretty straightforward answer so yeah, 100%, I want the manager to stay.”

And that sentiment has been echoed by Derby County midfielder Knight who was won all eight of his caps under Kenny.

Knight missed last month’s games against Azerbaijan and Qatar but is back in the squad after a recent injury.

Quizzed on Kenny, Knight said: “On a personal level, he’s given me my chance, obviously with the under-21s and he’s brought me up and given me eight senior caps.

“I’m grateful for that and I want to see him continue and hopefully with me continue underneath him.”
