Josh Charnley hits back at Adrian Lam after Wigan boss' accusation

Josh Charnley has issued a response to Adrian Lam following Warrington's win over Wigan, insisting he did not kick Liam Marshall in the head.

Charnley was involved in a coming together with his Wigan counterpart in the build-up to a crucial Jake Mamo try. Charnley collided with Marshall after he dropped to the floor to claim a loose ball, but ultimately dropped it after Charnley's leg appeared to make contact with the back of his head. Mamo subsequently picked up the ball and raced the length of the field to put the Warriors two scores behind.

After the game, Lam said it should have been a penalty to the Warriors as Charnley's actions had concussed Marshall, who failed a HIA and will now miss Sunday's game with Leigh.

"In my opinion the player was kicked in the head," Lam said.

"Whether it was accidental or not, obviously it was accidental, defeats the purpose, it was a penalty."

He went on to say: "That's what it is, it's a penalty. It doesn't matter if it's an accident or not, he kicked him in the head and knocked him out. That's a penalty to us."

Lam's comments triggered a response from Charnley, who took to social media to give his version of events.

He posted on social media: "Listen I didn't kick him in the head.

"I'm running at speed for a ball which was on the floor. We've both been committed to the ball and we've clashed together! You get told to put your head in where it hurts it's Rugby League."

Charnley started his career at Wigan, scoring a phenomenal 162 tries in 171 games before moving to rugby union side Sale Sharks in 2017. After one season he returned to Super League with the Wolves.
