Josh Brownhill addresses future, Sunderland and Norwich want keeper - Championship rumours

With the Championship season getting underway this weekend, some managers will be frantically trying to conclude transfer deals to get new faces in their squad in a bid to hit the ground running.

Nigel Pearson won't be one of those after confirming transfer business is likely to remain quiet in regards to incomings unless one or two players leave. He also claimed there could be no new arrivals but then again refused to rule anything out.

There's still plenty of time for circumstances to change with the market closing on September 1 and with most free transfers now finding new clubs, it means clubs may have to be patient in getting deals over the line when there is a fee involved.

That is because there's the need to source replacements, the temptation of a better offer and time to negotiate a deal for the selling club.

Even if it's gone quiet regarding City's transfer business in recent weeks, there's still plenty of transfer rumours surrounding the Championship and the club's rivals.

Sunderland and Norwich looking at a stopper

The two Championship newbies may have taken different routes to the second tier but they are both battling it out for free agent Joel Robles, according to reports.

It's claimed both teams want the 32-year-old former Everton stopper who left Real Betis on the expiry of his contract at the end of last season. Robles would return with bags of experience in English football having spent five years with the Toffees, albeit as a back-up keeper for the majority of matches.

The Canaries already have a healthy number of keepers among their ranks in Tim Krul, Angus Gunn, Michael McGovern and Dan Barden therefore it remains to be seen how much truth there is in the rumours of Norwich's interest.

Sunderland boss Alex Neil knows the Championship during his time with Preston and will know the type of characters needed in his squad to ensure their survival and there's a consensus they need a new stopper to challenge Anthony Patterson and Alex Bass for the No1 shirt.

Burnley to go Brazilian

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is keeping busy in the transfer market since his appointment and reports in Lancashire Live claim they'll have another new face through the door in the next 24 hours.

Brazilian full-back Vitinho is set to join from Cercle Brugge to become the ninth signing of the summer. The report adds how the Clarets are expected to add at least four or five new faces before the end of the transfer window.

Vitinho is well known to Kompany from his time in Belgium with the player also previously coming through the ranks at Brazilian club Cruzeiro.

Although two players are set to depart imminently in winger Dwight McNeil and Maxwel Cornet. McNeil is heading to Frank Lampard's Everton while Cornet is wanted by both West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Josh Brownhill addresses his future

Speculation around his future this summer has been very quiet considering he was one of the standout performers in Burnley's relegation. West Ham and Southampton have been tentatively linked but nothing more than that as it stands.

It's relevant because City can earn some pocket money should he make the switch this summer. The Robins included a clause in his contract meaning they will pocket around 15 and 20 per cent on any profit Burnley earn on the £9m they paid City for him in 2020.

He addressed the media this afternoon and was asked on his future which claimed he wants to stay at Turf Moor although dropped a hint he could leave by adding "anything can happen to anyone" in the window.

Middlesbrough to cash in on Tavernier

Middlesbrough are set to rake in a healthy £12m after accepting a bid from Bournemouth for Marcus Tavernier, according to John Percy.

He will undergo his medical in the next 24 hours before making the move in a bid to help Scott Parker's side avoid relegation from the top flight.

Boro will have a hefty transfer kitty themselves with Djed Spence already leaving for Tottenham in a £15m deal. They have made three signings themselves, all arriving on free transfers.

Chris Wilder's promotion hopefuls reportedly placed an enquiry for forward Antoine Semenyo and while it seems they could have the funds to test the waters, Bristol Live understands the reports were wide of the mark.
