Joseph Okumu Rangers and Celtic snub backed as pundit hits back at Genk transfer critics

Kenyan legend Mike Kisaghi has hit back at critics of countrymen Joseph Okumu's move to Belgium amid links with Rangers and Celtic.

The versatile defender is highly-rated and has been one of the stars of the Elfsborg side in recent months - with the Swedish side admitting it would be tough to keep their talisman.

The centre-back turned down interest from the Scottish Premiership to join Genk in a deal worth around £3million.

With clubs in Ligue 1 also understood to be pursuing the deal along with Celtic and Rangers, the switch has received a mixed reception in the 22-year-old's homeland.

Kisaghi, who is considered the greatest player in Kenyan football history, leapt to the defence of Okumu insisting the deal will be a stepping stone to bigger things.

Kisaghi told Goal : “(Okumu) has made the right decision as per what his heart picked.

“Let us stop attacking him (and saying) he should have moved to France or Scotland. He knows why he picked Belgium and, by the way, he may not stay long in that league.

“We have several scouts in Belgium and, if he stays fit and earns regular playing time, he could soon move to England.

“There is always a starting point in anything you do. He has started in Belgium and I know the next destination will shock many.”
