Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat review: Union J star wows Dublin crowd

Union J star Jaymi Hensley continued his transition from boyband heartthrob to stage star last night with a stellar performance as the title character in 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' in Dublin.

A fantastic ensemble cast graced the Bord Gais Energy Theatre stage, including the 2012 X-Factor semi-finalist to perform the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, and earned a long standing ovation from the Irish crowd.

Retelling the Biblical story of Joseph, his 11 brothers and the coat of many colours, this musical is full of unforgettable songs and memorable performances.

It's a slightly more modern and up-tempo show than fans of the show might remember, with Hensley and his eleven brothers learning their steps from new choreographer Gary Lloyd.

While the star's vulnerable and unique performance is undeniable it's the rest of the cast, particularly veteran James Head as Jacob and Andrew Geater as Pharaoh that make this show an all-round triumph.

And one stand-out in their performance is professional newcomer Alexandra Doar, who is flawless with her vocals as the busy narrator character.

The key songs that wowed a large crowd consisting of fans young and old included obvious choices like 'Any Dream Will Do' and 'Go, Go, Go Joseph'.

But a mention must be made of the show-stopping 'Song of the King' performed by Andrew Geater's Evis-inspired Pharaoh and the brothers' rendition of 'One More Angel in Heaven'.

Also, the 'Joseph Choir' made up of students from the Dublin Stage School were also impressive in their small role in the show.

One critique of the otherwise impressive performance would be the brief scene where Joseph is sold to Potiphar, and is jailed after appearing to sleep with the wife of his new owner.

It's perhaps crosses the line into 'too raunchy' territory for the 'family-friendly' tag that has been attached to the production.

But it is a small blip on an otherwise fantastic show, which is must-see for any musical theatre lovers in Dublin this week during it's run to Saturday evening.
