Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Nottingham's Theatre Royal is the best in years

It’s quite a challenge trying to recall all the Josephs I’ve seen since the first one way back – probably just after the original story was written.

That was a young Jess Conrad and since then a who’s who of pop singers, soap stars, TV presenters and talent show discoveries have taken on the title role in this perennially popular musical.

Now Joseph is in the hands of boy band Union J’s Jaymi Hensley and he makes a more impressive mark than most.

That’s mainly down to his outstanding prowess as a vocalist, able to hit all the big notes with natural ease and control.

But he also brings a youthful vitality to the part that made a palpable connection with the audience who cheered his stylish performance of Close Any Door and Any Dream Will Do.

He is matched by newcomer Alexandra Doar, making her professional debut but translating the pivotal role of Narrator with the confidence and poise of someone with years of experience.

Her crystal-clear delivery keeps everyone apace with the story of Jacob, a strong performance by James Head, and his 12 sons, Joseph being the chosen one.

The jealous XI, whose harmonies provide some memorable moments, sell Joseph into Egyptian slavery and his future looks bleak until his mystical ability to interpret dreams gets him noticed by the Pharoah and leads to an emotional reunion with his family.

Ingeniously, writers Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber interpreted their Pharoah as a homage to Elvis Presley and Andrew Geater makes a great, hip-swivelling job of it.

Director Bill Kenwright’s latest production has been given a few new tweaks, sparkling sets, an extra song or two, and some bright choreography.

He has also gathered together a talented company, including the charming Attic Theatre School Choir, to ensure this is the best Joseph to hit the road for many a year.
