Jose Mourinho would drop Everton star for England's Euro 2020 campaign

Jose Mourinho has revealed he would start Dean Henderson over Jordan Pickford in England's opening Euro 2020 game this weekend.

Gareth Southgate’s side kick-off their campaign against Croatia at Wembley on Sunday afternoon in the first of their three group games.

Pickford wasted no time in emerging as Southgate's first-choice after being handed his international debut back in 2017.

But the Everton goalkeeper's place had come under threat earlier in the campaign for both club and country following a number of high-profile mistakes.

However, Pickford finished the campaign in tremendous form and is now preparing for the upcoming European Championships as Southgate’s No.1.

But despite Pickford’s fine end to the season, and Henderson’s dip in form after he replaced David de Gea in the Manchester United starting line-up, Mourinho would go with the latter.

“I would go with Henderson in goal,” he told talkSPORT. “I am a Henderson fan. He was at United during my time, when he was a kid.

“He came to my office asking for a loan and at that time went to Shrewsbury. And when that kid was asking me to go on loan the kid was saying when I come back, I come back to be number one.

“We look to each other – the staff and the goalkeeper coaches – and were like we have De Gea!”

But speaking earlier this week, Henderson admitted Pickford 'deserves' to be England’s No.1 at Euro 2020.

He said: “I’m ready to play when called upon. Jordan deserves this tournament, he was brilliant at the World Cup.

“I’ve got a lot of time for him, he’s a northern lad like me. He’s been fantastic in an England jersey, so he deserves this tournament.

“I’ll be there ready, like Sam [Johnstone] will as well, if the opportunity arises and one of us gets on the pitch.

“My aim for this tournament is to help Jordan in the best way I can and really support him so he can be the best for our country.”
