Jose Mourinho weighs in on the debate over Marcus Rashford's best position for Manchester United

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has weighed in on the debate over Marcus Rashford's best position.

The Englishman started the season playing from the left with Anthony Martial occupying the number nine role.

However, with the Frenchman out injured, Rashford has moved more central but has sometimes struggled to make an impression.

Similarly, for England, Rashford has been used from the left to devastating effect and scored a fantastic goal for the Three Lions on Monday night.

During his time at Old Trafford, Mourinho always preferred to use Romelu Lukaku as his central striker, with Rashford from the left.

Two years ago, Rashford single-handedly won the game for United playing in that position as he scored a brace by exploiting the space left by Trent Alexander-Arnold down the right as United secured a 2-1 win.

Speaking about that game, in particular, Mourinho has revealed he believes that Rashford's best position is as a wide forward and not as a traditional number nine.

Speaking to Sky Sports as part of their punditry team for United's clash with Liverpool, he said: "We started the game from two important perspectives. First, Liverpool press a lot high up the pitch and by playing short.

"The quality we had was very dangerous so we decided to go over that dangerous situation and go long. The second was the spaces between the full-backs and the centre-halves.

"By playing Marcus, which in my opinion is his best position, coming from the left to the centre and not when he’s the number nine. On the counter-attack, yes, but when you are dominating possession, he’s not a player who plays well with his back to goal.

"So I always thought it was best for him to come from the side, especially from the left."

Rashford has scored four goals for United this season - including the one against Liverpool - and has also registered two assists.
