Jose Mourinho underlines what is 'non-negotiable' from his players ahead of Newcastle United test

Jose Mourinho has thrown the gauntlet down to his Tottenham players ahead of Sunday's clash with Newcastle United (2.05pm).

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has reminded his players of exactly what he doesn't want to see from them at St James' Park after standards slipped earlier this month.

A painful surrender in Croatia against Dinamo Zagreb cost them their place in the Europa League as they let a 2-0 first leg lead slip and bowed out 3-2 on aggregate, while the North London defeat at Arsenal piled pressure on the ex-Porto boss.

His side bounced back against Aston Villa to ease the pressure on his shoulders, but he has warned his troops they can't relax on Tyneside.

Reflecting on Spurs' 2-0 win at Aston Villa, Mourinho said: "In the first half there we zero shots on target from Villa.

"We were in total control. That was because Harry Kane and Vinicius were our two best defenders.

"The team was always pressing high.

"The team was compact and not playing amazingly well.

"We were always in control even when the opponent had the ball.

"The second half was OK and they reacted (Villa), they had a couple of crosses, they played more direct and had a couple of shots blocked and Hugo Lloris had one simple save.

"The feeling was the game was under control and the game was there.

"People worked very hard and even people with cramp kept going. This should not be negotiable.

"I repeat, we can lose but you can't lose the way we did in the previous couple of matches."
